March falls within the Colombian Caribbean dry season, making it one of the best months for Santa Marta's beaches: constant sun, calm seas and trails in good shape. If you are planning your trip, here are five beaches you cannot miss.

1. Playa Grande, Taganga

On the other side of the Taganga hill, Playa Grande combines golden sand, beach shacks and a backpacker vibe. It is famous for snorkeling and fresh-fish lunches. You get there walking the trail from town or by boat from the bay.

2. Bahía Concha, Parque Tayrona

A sheltered bay of calm seas, ideal for family swimming. Bahía Concha it is part of Tayrona Park, so entry requires a park ticket and the vibe stays natural.

Key fact: Bring cash: on Tayrona beaches there are no ATMs and most stalls only take cash.

3. Cabo San Juan del Guía

Tayrona’s most emblematic beach: two bays joined by a viewpoint atop a giant rock. Cabo San Juan it is only reached hiking the park trails or by authorized boat. There is a hammock and camping area (reservation needed) for spending the night facing the sea.

4. El Rodadero

The urban beach par excellence: El Rodadero beach it has calm seas, front-line restaurants and every service nearby. It is the most convenient option if you stay in the area, although it fills up on weekends.

5. Playa Blanca

Light sand and turquoise sea in a small bay near El Rodadero. A Playa Blanca you get there by boat or walking the trail, and on arrival expect beach shacks with fresh fish and snorkeling off the shore.

Final tip: Tayrona Park has scheduled closures during the year: confirm the dates before planning Bahía Concha or Cabo San Juan. And on weekends, arrive early at any beach to find a good spot.
