Santa Marta is a year-round destination: stable Caribbean heat, warm sea and no hurricanes. But rain, wind and Tayrona closures change the plan a lot. Month-by-month guide to choose well.

Weather at a glance

SeasonMonthsWhat it's like
High dryDec–MarFull sun, strong breeze (ideal for kitesurf), choppier sea. High season: book ahead.
VeranilloMid Jun–JulMid-year break in the rains: sunny days with fewer people than December.
RainsSep–NovHeavy but short downpours (afternoons). October the wettest. Lower prices, swollen rivers.
ShoulderApr–May, AugMix of sun and occasional rain. Good price–weather balance.

Typical temperature: 28–32 °C in the city, sea at 27–28 °C. Minca (600 m) is 4–6 °C cooler; bring a light jacket if you go up.

Best season for your plan

  • Beaches and Tayrona: December–March (clearer sea, dry trails). Check closures below.
  • Diving: December–April, best visibility.
  • Kitesurf: December–March, with the northern trade breeze.
  • Rivers and waterfalls in full flow: October–November (Pozo Azul, Marinka, Buritaca).
  • Lost City: December–March; avoid September (indigenous closure). Details in the trekking guide.
  • Tight budget: May–June and September–November (fewer people, better rates).

Tayrona Park closures (important)

The park closes three times a year for ecological recovery and Kogui, Arhuaco and Wiwa rituals. Dates usually are:

  • February 1–15
  • June 1–15
  • October 19–November 2

Always confirm on the official Parques Nacionales site before buying flights: dates can shift. If a closure hits you, Bahía Concha, Chengue and downtown stay open.

Events worth the trip

  • Fiestas del Mar (July): the city's big party, with parades, concerts and water sports. See Fiestas del Mar.
  • Film Festival: dates vary, Teatro Santa Marta venue. See Film Festival.
  • Easter week and year-end: peak occupancy; book lodging weeks ahead (where to stay).
Bottom line: if you can only pick one window, aim for January–March (outside the February closure) or the June–July veranillo. Always check Tayrona closures before booking.
